We could play it safe. We could avoid risks and trust ourselves. We could go through the motions but not build real relationships. We could settle in and stop reaching out. We could avoid biblical topics that require us to change. Sure, we could stay in the shallows, but we would miss the entire adventure to which God has called us. Jesus warns us about getting stuck in the shallows. (Think seed stuck in rocky soil and houses built on sand.) And he calls us to the deep – to a place beyond sight, certainty and self-sufficiency. It’s too common that people say things like “Christians are so shallow” and “Churches are all superficial.” It’s time to dive deep. Let’s talk about what matters most – the commitments that keep us out of the shallows.
