Jesus was a storyteller. Whether standing before a large crowd or sharing a meal with friends, when he spoke, it was most often to tell a story. These short stories – some brief enough to tweet – are called parables, and they were the hallmark of Jesus’ teaching. On the one hand, they have been understood by men, women, and children around the world for two millennia. On the other hand, they challenge us still. These simple stories have soul, have depth, have a sting. Many of Jesus’ stories are preserved in the Bible, but few explanations. Every person, every culture, every generation has to dig into them for themselves. Or rather, these stories dig into us. Where we might resist truth delivered in a more straightforward way, these stories slip past our defenses to provoke, challenge, and inspire us. Whatever you want right now, what you need might just be a good story.
